Brent Millare
Senior Director of Engineering
Brent Millare is a machine learning research engineer specializing in GPU performance, parallel computing, and scalable AI systems. With more than five years of experience building, developing, and optimizing machine learning infrastructure, he brings a rigorous understanding of concurrency, cloud computing, and high-performance software to complex production workloads.
Most recently, Brent worked as a Software Development Engineer at Two Sigma, where his work included differentiable optimization for financial machine learning. He developed and integrated TensorFlow optimizers designed to directly improve objectives such as net profit and the Sharpe ratio, implemented custom gradient operations to increase training efficiency, and helped redesign model-release workflows to support neural-network fine-tuning and stronger real-world performance.
Before Two Sigma, Brent spent more than two years at Amazon Web Services, serving as a Software Development Engineer II across SageMaker AI Algorithms and the Elastic Container Service Scheduler. In these roles, he contributed to managed machine learning algorithm containers and large-scale cloud scheduling systems, strengthening his expertise in reliable distributed infrastructure and performance-sensitive computing.
Earlier in his career, Brent served as Research Faculty at Johns Hopkins University, following doctoral research in biomedical and medical engineering at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He holds a PhD in Biomedical/Medical Engineering and a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from the University of California, Riverside. His interdisciplinary background connects fundamental research with the practical engineering required to translate advanced machine learning methods into robust, scalable systems.
